81‘s “Like Mom Said” EP, briefly took the number one spot in Beatport‘s Future House Top 100. The EP received support from the likes of Low Steppa, Ill Phil, Wood Holly and Shiba San, so we thought it was about time to get a bit more familiar with this German duo.
– Tell us a bit about yourselves, who are you?
“We are Karl Wirz and Carsten Meier and we hail from Hildesheim, Germany. We both started DJing in the late nineties. Starting out with primarily playing House music, but early in the 2000 era, we both got more into Drum & Bass. After being rooted in the DnB scene for quite some time, we decided to return to our House roots by bringing the “81” project to life. We never lost our passion for vibrating Bass and Tech House.”
– How’d it feel to see Shiba San dropping your track Mechanism?
“Ah! There is a bit of a story to this, because we found out through someone who commented on our premiere on Data Transmission. He told us Shiba San had dropped it at Dirtybird Campout. We we’re blown away by this. A few minutes later House of Hustle boss Patrik sent us a YouTube-link and said: ‘Play from 4:20. I’m sure you’ll have a beer.’ We watch the video back every now and then, just because we are so proud of this.”
– What is your favorite track on the EP?
“That’s not an easy one to answer, because we like all of them. We’re very content with the quality of all three tracks. But if you’d say: “gun to your head, what’s your choice”, we would say “Mechanism” is the one for us.”
– Who is a House of Hustle artist who really inspires you?
“Well there are quite a few! If we had to name some, we’d say Frederique, FromDropTillDawn and Mike McFly inspired us. But all of the House of Hustle-artists are great producers, we think. The quality is very high across the board on HoH. We play a lot of House of Hustle and House of Bangerz tracks in our DJ sets.”
– What’s coming up still in 2017? And what are your goals for 2018?
“For 2017 we have a tune called “Think Twice” coming out on the upcoming House of Hustle ADE Compilation. We have some more tracks in the making. The goal for 2018 will be to get collaborations going with talented artists across the globe and get the 81 sound out there even more!”
